Current scenario: India gains forest cover in 2013 as compared to 2012
India’s forest cover estimates rose from 692027 sq km in 2012 to 697898 sq km in 2013 . The top 10 states in terms of forest cover in 2013 were, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu comprising 66% of the country’s total forest cover. This data holds significance with respect to the fact that India’s carbon intensity management will play a crucial role in determining the world’s ability to limit the global temperature rise to two degree Celsius by the year 2100.
